Whether it’s your new year’s goal to take better care of your skin or you’re feeling extra dry in this colder weather and looking for a way to soften things up, a skincare regimen can change the game!!! There’s a simple four step process to a healthy skincare routine that I want to share with you (and a simplified version at the end for the girl who wants to keep it suuuuper simple):
- Cleanse Your Skin
So first step, you want to use a cleanser based off of your skin type and your skin care needs and goals that you have. My biggest thing is cleanse, cleanse twice, or just make sure that you pair something with your cleanser to really activate the cleanser. So don’t just put cleanser on your hands and swish your hands around your face. You want to use a silicone scrubber or a microfiber towel or some kind of wash cloth that is going to work the cleanser into your skin and really lift the dirt and makeup off your face. Your fingers just don’t provide enough resistance between the cleanser and your skin to really help the cleanser be effective in taking off your makeup, oils, dirt, environmental factors, on your face. So that’s the first step.
- Prep Your Skin
The second step is you want to prep your skin. So once your face is completely cleansed and dried off, you’re going to prep your skin with the toner. This helps to balance the pH of your skin and helps your skin get prepared to receive the treatment. So the toner is going to help your skin absorb the treatment that’s going to be in your next step.
- Treat Your Skin
Step three, you want to treat your skin. So whether you have acne and you’re trying to combat your acne or you have or you have aging skin, you have dark spots, whatever it is, you are going to choose a serum that is going to treat your specific skin care needs and your specific skin problems. Serums are the most potent product of this skincare regimen. A little goes a long way. It’s like your power product: a lot of powerful ingredients and a little bit of product. So once your preparation aka your toner is dried, you are going to work the serum into your skin. You can push it down into your skin, patting lightly or with medium pressure, getting the serum worked into your skin. Now you’re gonna let this air dry.
- Protect Your Skin
Once the serum is dry, you want to protect all of the steps that you just did with some moisturizer. This moisturizer is not only going to hydrate your skin and bring in moisture, but it’s also going to protect your skin from environmental factors that cause aging or create problems for your desired outcome. So moisturize, protect your skin, and once that is absorbed by your skin you can follow your skincare routine with your everyday makeup look. Or you can just wear your freshly taken care of skin au natural!
Okay, now for my girls who say they’re lucky to wash their face before they go to bed but want to start implementing some kind of skincare routine: the two products that I recommend most are a cleanser and moisturizer. So you want to cleanse your face every single day: working against and removing oils, dirt, environmental pollution and environmental factors, makeup, whatever the day brought your way you want to wash that off. And again, same thing, you want to pair a cleanser with some kind of tool that’s going to help work the cleanser into your skin and really remove all of all of the deposits that have been made on your face throughout the day. Next, once your face is clean, throw some moisturizer on. You can do this with your fingers, your hands, and this again will just provide at least some hydration and some protection for your skin. It’s a two step process and is totally achievable for the busy mom or if you like a simple, no fuss skincare routine.
Once you are ready to implement this simple four step routine, I recommend finding a regime that is made for your skin type. Email me at hello@emilyreneebarton.com for a customized recommendation!
